The key to successful transformation

The statement that "70% of change programmes fail" is often repeated although I have still not found true empirical research to substantiate that statement.

However, what our own research shows is that where there is an effective focus on architecting the transformation at the outset, then the transformation runs far more smoothly and the results are better.

Developing an effective blueprint for any transformation is something we spend a good deal of energy on with our clients. It clearly pays off.

In our view, the hallmarks of a good Transformation Blueprint are:

  • A well developed future Operating Model design. Too often organisations skip this or confuse it with Organisational Design. It is the equivalent of the architect's drawing for a house. It not only tells you how the components - systems, processes, organisation etc. - work together but also what competencies, skills and capabilities you will need in the new world.

  • A properly considered transition approach. Every organisation wants, and arguably needs, to start the transformation immediately and get it over with as soon as possible so that they can reap the benefits. But you need to be realistic. The pace and timing needs to be aligned with the organisation's capacity and capabilities. Running before you can walk too often ends in tears.

  • A well thought through Resource Plan. Bringing about transformational change requires a great deal of energy frequently over an extended period of time. It requires a combination of specialist skills and functional business knowledge. You need to properly work out what it is going to take and then invest in having the right resources. Remember, if you think it's expensive to hire a professional, wait till you use an amateur.

We have re-framed the old adage of the 5P's (Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance) as 'go slow to go quick'. If you expend more energy on the thinking and development of the Transformation Blueprint before you rush into the doing, the subsequent delivery will be smoother and far more successful.
